Learning foreign language without tedious cramming

As the great Russian writer Lev Tolstoy wrote „the knowledge is the knowledge when it is acquired by the effort of thought and not of memory.“

Is it actually possible to teach a foreign language? The answer is no. It’s the same as teaching someone to think. While the person does not have a purpose of learning and internal motivation, while there is no desire to discover the whole world with the help of a foreign language, there is no need in studying it. It won’t work. Learning language is an active action, the language can be learned but not taught. And this process requires joint efforts of both a student and a teacher, their sincere interest and involvement in the organization of such cooperation.

Students are often told that they need to memorize and to cram as much as they can, but contemporary methods of language learning show that the most important thing is to create the favorable conditions to study the material. This approach to learning itself stimulates interest in learning new things. And a proper lesson at a language school is not just another activity behind the school desks but an interesting meeting of students with their teacher. The teacher is not the main character, but rather a wise director, who only directs his disciples, suggests, advises and supports the activity of students throughout the lesson.

„Foreign language learning is an intellectual activity and its success is provided by a number of certain factors: positive motivation, emotionally supportive environment and the opportunity to acquire personally meaningful knowledge.“

As a result, the foreign language turns from the subject of study to a means of communication: students discuss, compare, assess, evaluate. The learning process raises interest in students, it captures and captivates them. And when the knowledge and skills become an important part of life, they are easier to master.

Foreign language learning is an intellectual activity and its success is provided by a number of certain factors: positive motivation, emotionally supportive environment and the opportunity to acquire personally meaningful knowledge. In other words, active communication is the goal and the primary means of teaching foreign languages. As they say, it is impossible to learn swimming without entering the water. That’s why the method of „immersion“ significantly increases the activity of the students.

The experience of many teachers and methodists shows that active learning methods have a positive effect on attitude to learning, stimulate creativity and general intellectual development of students of language courses.

To sum up, it is certainly possibly to study foreign language without boring lectures and tedious cramming.  All you need is an effective methodology that enables students to better use their internal resources. It results in the shortest possible time frame in which students begin to freely communicate and this is the goal of all those learning a foreign language.
