1. Read Russian literature in the original.<\/h2>\n

Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov lose rhythm and register in every translation. You do not need perfect Russian to start: adapted readers work from A2, and from around B1 you can read Chekhov's short stories with a dictionary. Start with short stories, not with \"War and Peace\" - that is a realistic first year, and it is enough to feel the difference.<\/p>\n

2. Speak with over 250 million people.<\/h2>\n

Russian is official in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and widely understood across the former Soviet region, from the Baltic states to Central Asia. If you travel or work anywhere in this space, Russian is the language that works outside hotel receptions.<\/p>\n

Far fewer Western professionals learn Russian than Spanish or French.
